The Greater Geneva Bern area has become very competitive in the international medical technologies (MedTech) market.  This competitiveness is due most notably to the expertise in precision engineering developed in the watch-making industry, as well as a solid financial system supportive of innovation.

A leading position

With its 1,400 manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and service providers, Switzerland has the largest number of companies involved in medical technologies per resident in Europe.
The sector employs 63,000 highly-qualified persons and represents 2.6% of GDP and 5% of total Swiss exports. Statistics this significant cannot be found in any other country.

Richness and diversification

In the Greater Geneva Bern area, hundreds of suppliers, manufacturers and international trading companies work with biomaterials, cardiovascular and dental devices and implants, devices for diabetics, electro-medical equipment, medical, orthopedic and ophthalmologic imagery, respiratory equipment, surgical instruments as well as treatment for wounds.
A sampling of these companies includes Alcon, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Pall Life Sciences, Medtronic, Beckman Coulter, Stryker, Edwards Lifesciences, Greatbatch Medical, Ypsomed and Johnson & Johnson, to name just a few.  The region is also home to companies active in the field of automation, micro-machining and micro-assembly, all of which are essential for the medtech industry.
